BGLS Happenings
By Paul Donovan, BGLS President
The spring semester for BGLS has been a busy one, and one full of changes. First, our dearly-loved advisor Deb Taylor made the decision to further her career by taking a new position in Topeka. In our search for a new female faculty advisor for BGLS, we found Dana Britton (Sociology Dept). She joins Bob Clark (Modern Languages Dept) as our faculty advisors for BGLS.
On an interesting note, both I and Bob Clark received a call from the White House. Tipper Gore is looking for g/b/l conferences to speak at, and she was wondering if we were going to be putting on another one this year, like we did last summer. So we are trying to keep in contact with the White House to see if we can get some serious interest in having her come to K-State.
Which leads us to the idea of a conference. BGLS is in the beginning stages of planning another conference, to be held this fall. The conference committee has begun meeting to find themes and dates. We'll be letting everyone know what's going on as we make the decisions. Anyone who is interested in helping with the conference, please email bgls@ksu.edu.
Last semester, a large part of our service to the campus community consisted of doing speaker's panels to various classes and church groups. We did somewhere around 30. This semester looks to be even busier. There are more and more groups who have expressed interest in having us come speak. This is a tremendous opportunity for bi/gay/les people to honestly speak to the straight community about what it's really like to be non-straight. This is also a tremendous opportunity for the straight community to educate themselves on issues that are vital to us.
