Jennifer Bame on Dateline!
If you watched Ellen DeGeneres' appearance with Diane Sawyer on the May 7 NBC Dateline, you may have seen a series of pictures "float" across your television screen as Ellen mentioned all of the wonderful support letters she'd received over the past year. One of those pictures was of our very own Jennifer Bame, who had this to say about writing Ellen:
The main reason I wrote to Ellen DeGeneres was to thank her for her
bravery, honesty, and for radically changing my relationship with my mother.
When I came out to my mother, she embraced me and accepted
me, but I could see that our relationship had changed. Suddenly,
I was no longer the daughter she admired for my individual qualities;
I became her lesbian daughter--who she still loved very much--but who had
instantly become a stranger to her. When Ellen DeGeneres and Ellen
Morgan came out on national tv, my relationship with my mother began to
change radically. Suddenly my mother was able to see me as a grown woman
who loves to cook, read, camp, listen to music, watch movies, and . . .
Suddenly, I became a human being to my mother once again.
