KSU Lutheran Church Makes Public Affirmation to Lesbigay Community by Dakota Saunders
Although the Lutheran Church has no uniformity about homosexuality as a whole, Lutheran Bishops want to continue the dialogue on lesbigay concerns, according to Pastor Jayne Thompson of KSU’s Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM). Jayne wants the lesbigay community in Manhattan to know that everyone is always welcome to LCM’s Sunday worship service, which is 7:15 pm. LCM holds services at the Luther House at 1745 Anderson.
Every Sunday worship bulletin at LCM includes the following statement: LCM at KSU is a Reconciled in Christ Community Church of the ELCA. Recognizing God’s call to minister to all people in a world that is often an unloving place and, realizing that sexual minority persons are often scorned by society and alienated from the Church, we wish to make known our affirmation and welcome to our gay and lesbian friends in Christ. After a lengthy Bible study, a meeting with Bishop Maahs and much prayer, this action was taken by the students on March 21 and affirmed by the LCM Board on April 2, 1996.
Jayne states that many members of the Lutheran Church are working to call an end to discrimination against sexual minorities in other areas of the Church, particularly with respect to clergy. She hopes that all Lutheran churches will someday welcome its lesbigay community with open arms.
